Welcome to 100 Themes Boot Camp!

Sat Oct 3, 2009, 12:13 PM
4th Admendment added. We ask that all read, these clarifications are very important.

This all started when roommates :iconnytrinhia: =Nytrinhia and :iconosha-briefs: ~Osha-Briefs became disgusted with their lack of artmaking and have thus self-imposed a mandatory Art Boot Camp. *Iris-Uriko-Briefs and *haphazard-witch have good-naturedly (with some kicking and screaming) joined in their quest of self-improvement.

The goals of this project is to reinforce the importance and priority of art in our lives, because as college students/professional artists/artists in general, we can often lose track of what's important to us and the whole reason we're here doing what we do. To make art, learn of art and become better at producing art. Through repetition and the system of reward and punishment, we hope to get ourselves back into the habit of creating art on a daily basis.

If you would like to join us in our quest, send us a note and and we'll add you to the list of participants here. We recommend posting the rules to your wall as a constant visual reminder. After posting the rules, pick out a 100 themes challenge list for yourself and BEGIN!

A link to 11 lists that we have for 100 Themes challenges. We did not write them, but can't find the owners. A search has been started and credit will be given to the owners when/if we find them. If you created one of the lists, or would like to contribute a list, let us know and appropriate action will be taken: [link]

RULES:

1.You must draw one per day.
2.Begins on Sunday, ends on Saturday.
3.Each days challenge does not have to be “finished” but it must be a quality piece.
4.Each challenge MUST hang on the wall (or ceiling, closet, bookshelf or potentially the side of the dresser) and posted on dA.
5.For every 7 days completed, respective episodes are rewarded.
6.In the event that a day is missed, contributions of 10 cents must be made to the JAR of SHAME.
7.Homework NEVER counts.
8.The 100 themes can NEVER replace homework.
9.Personal projects DO count.
10.Any medium may be used. (If on computer, must be printed in 48 hours.)
11.Must be at least 5inx7in
12.The challenge word cannot be the subject matter, (refer to conceptual tools if you’re stuck- don’t be a wuss and cop out!) unless it is a technical exercise (meaning it cannot be poop)
13.ONLY INJURY OR FATAL ILLNESS CAN EXEMPT ONE FROM A DAY’S CHALLENEGE.

Further explanation of the rules:
01. One per day, pretty self explanatory. This also means you can't do five in one day and consider yourself "covered" for the next few days.
02. We started on Sunday for ease of keeping track of the days. You can start whenever, but we recommend starting Sunday or Monday so that at the end of the week (Saturday or Sunday) you're free to take stock of the past week and see how you did.
03. Finished sketches count, but they must again, be quality.
04. We demand you hang it somewhere you can see. The reasoning behind this is that since you will be looking at it for at least the next 100 days, you will put forth the effort to produce quality work. At the end of the 100 days a picture must be taken of the work hung up in order to graduate from this Boot Camp. Seeing all your work together is good and will give you a sense of accomplishment. Also, as many have asked, posting to DA is mandatory, but we don't ask that you do it every day. We are not all blessed with digital cameras or scanners. Do the best you can. Visit your local Staples or printing store and ask if you can use their scanners. Or you can mooch off a friend or family member. Scanning a picture in doesn't cost ink, so I'm sure they'll be happy to oblige.
05. We don't know how you will reward yourselves, but Osha and Nytrinhia plan on allowing themselves to watch certain anime episodes. You may otherwise allow yourself to put money forth to buying a book you wanted or emptying the JAR of SHAME, it's up to you. Also, at the end of the final piece of work, you may give yourself a bigger incentive. Osha is buying an anatomy book, and Nytrinhia is buying Ponyo when it comes out on DVD.
06. Get a JAR of SHAME. It is a requirement. How much you put in is up to you. We decided on 10 cents because we're poor college students and even 10 cents is a lot of money.
07. Enough said.
08. Even though this was created to help school ourselves to be better creators, it was NOT made to help you to take the easy road with your own assignments. Of course, there is nothing stopping you. We will just have to trust in your honesty and honor to follow the rules.
09. This is about improving our art, which is personal. Of course personal projects (such as a chapter cover for your webcomic or other endeavors) are allowed as long as you adhere to the first rule. One per day. It cannot be a piece you had sitting in your drawer. You can pull a "Kick my own ass" and redo an old piece of art, but a new one must be made every day.
10. Watercolor, guache, acrylic, oil, ink, pencil, tablet- it's all fair game. But as they must be hung/displayed in one room together, make sure to print digital copies.
11. obviously, this means thumbnails don't count. 5x7 is a fair size requirement.
12. If you get the word "dog" and you take this opportunity to learn how to draw dogs, it counts. But it needs to be QUALITY work. Composition and movement in the piece is preferred, but not a requirement. Remember, the whole point is to improve yourself. DON'T COP OUT!
13. Amen.

1st Clarification Amendment: The Right for all to Participate

After further discussion with ~sayokitsune, it's come to our attention that for those of us inclined to the verbal and written language or art, it isn't very conducive for a writer to participate in this boot camp when many writers spend years working on the same book chapters. And while they can do free writing, some free writing snippets become a part of their larger work which becomes an assignment, because if they're going to turn in an assignment and get feedback, they want the feedback on their current work.

Unlike visual art, written art is inevitably linked to school work when it comes to creative writing. We have this to say to writers looking for a way to improve themselves.

IT'S ABOUT THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW, NOT THE LETTER. The point of not turning in a picture you did for boot camp as an illustration assignment is to make sure you are taking every opportunity to improve yourself. Turning in one for the other is being lazy, and boot camp is NOT about getting by with the least amount of effort. It is about putting forth the utmost, down to the last 0.001% of your effort into improving yourself. Written work is revisited numerous times, rewritten, scratched, scrapped, attacked, pieced together and refined. It's a long term project.

We do not ask that you write a novel every day for the next 100 days. We ask that you put forth daily effort to improve yourself. Take a six-sided die, roll, and take the resulting number and multiply by 100. 100-600 word limits. Do a simple piece of free writing every day. If it eventually becomes a larger project or a part of a larger project, then good! All the more power to you. Personal projects do cross paths with assignments occasionally.

Whether you turn it in for credit or take the time out of your school schedule to do more writing is up to you. Again, there's no 100 Themes Boot Camp sergeants touring the world looking for people that break the rules. No, as cool as that would be we can only depend on your honesty to yourself. What do you achieve? What do you lose? It's your decision, but once you make up your mind, don't change it.

2nd Clarification Admendment: The Right to a Busy Life Without Added Complication

Nytrinhia and Osha-Briefs were talking to each other and noticing the upcoming school semester and thinking about how much missing a day can set someone back if they try to do two pieces in one day. The following modification has been made/clarified for all of us, so that perhaps this will take the pressure off of those of us more inclined to busy lives.

If you miss a day, don’t try to make up with two pieces the next day. Simply acknowledge that you missed a day and put a dime/10 cents/whatever/ in the JAR of SHAME and pick up the next day with the missed art piece and continue. We don’t need to make life more difficult than it is, and life is very difficult. Simply adjust your schedule accordingly.
An example of what might happen:
Artist Smoe is going along, happily doing his boot camp assignments:
Monday- #56 Tuesday- #57 Wednesday- MISSED (10 cents to the JAR of SHAME) Thursday- #58 Friday- #59 And so on.

3rd Clarification Amendment: The Right to Write AND Draw

We were asked by ~redwerecat) if writing and visual pieces can be mixed. The answer is "Yes, as long as it is not a cop out." Again, the point of this boot camp is to not take it easy on ourselves. If you had a visual piece in mind for the day, but wrote a paragraph of text just to say you fullfilled the requirement, we ask you to man up, take your punishment and do better next time. However, if when you get your word for the day, you want to do a piece of writing for that word, feel free. A lot of us are not singuarly visual artists. We write too. And as such writing is a part of ourselves that we want to improve as well as our artistic talents. So go for it!

4th Clarification Amendment: The Right to Not Feel Like a Failure for Not Finishing

You know, as time goes on, we’ve found that despite making the best efforts to complete a theme every day, a lot of us cannot possibly make a finished piece of art work for the Boot Camp in just one day. Some of us are students attending college or secondary schooling, some of us have already graduated and are living as professional artists or do art as a hobby aside from our professional lives. Some of us are just plain busy. Therefore ~Osha-Briefs and =Nytrinhia have discussed and come to this conclusion:

We ask that you put aside a specific amount of time to work on your art for the Boot Camp. Optimally, four or five hours would be ideal. However, as stated, many of us don’t have such luxuries of time. The next best thing would be to set aside a single hour to commit to simply working on your Boot Camp pieces (Thumnailing, sketching, roughs, tight roughs, inking, coloring, finishing touches, etc) and just get done what you can in that time. Under that, half an hour committed to doing artwork, while not a whole lot, is better than nothing. If you still find yourself lacking enough time for even that, 15-20 minutes can be found somewhere in your day for art.

We feel that such a change to the Boot Camp is permissible because the goal of the Camp is to be in the habit of creating art. We should not feel like we have failed somehow if we did not finish something every day. Instead, our goal ought to be to do something art-related on a daily basis, the Themes and the Boot Camp are present specifically to give us, the artists, a goal and purpose while getting into the habit. As the instigators of this Camp, ~Osha-Briefs and =Nytrinhia both feel that we would rather the participants get in some kind of artwork daily and put out quality work in the long run, rather than rush every day to do slap-dash work and when it’s over, see a lot of things that could have been good ideas, but simply weren’t because they felt they had to finish for the sake of the camp. The Camp is here for the sake of the artist, not the other way around.

If you have any questions, please note =Nytrinhia for clarification.
